Change is Occuring

Here is another great story about the expereinces from one of our volunteers, Louise. It is so amazing to hear about the changes that are happening in Rwanda!

2011 was my fifth trip to Rwanda and it is always so exciting to see the many changes that are occurring. The Rwandese have always been friendly and welcoming but it is increasingly evident they are aiming to put the past behind them and move ahead to create a brighter future.

Change is evident even as you step off the plane. At the airport the heavy boarding has been removed and the restrictions and early levels of wariness are gone. Instead you can sit down to a coffee in the new café. Change is again evident in the changing landscape of the capital Kigali. The roads are wider, the buildings higher, business seems to be flourishing and work teams on the sides of the roads are digging channels for internet cabling.

The people too are moving on and it is amazing to play even a small part in God’s future for this country. This year it was exciting to see students at work in the high schools. It was so encouraging to see the students being trained who will be the future teachers. They seem to be grasping English, which is now the designated language for teaching in higher primary and secondary schooling. It is impressive as this is probably their fourth or fifth language!! Their knowledge of content is sound, so it is wonderful to have been again given the opportunity to come alongside the students and teachers to encourage change in their methods of teaching.

If you would like to volunteer, please apply online here.  Or visit our website to find out more information. Applications close 30th January, 2012.

“I will never be the same again.”

Here is another incredible story from Jen. She is a volunteer that went to Uganda and Kenya with us this year. Her experiences are amazing. Read below:

When I think about my experience when travelling to Uganda and Kenya this year with HOPE:Education, “Wow” is what comes to mind. The months leading up to our 17 day trip were intense but completely worthwhile. I saw each member of the team work diligently to present their best ideas and resources and give themselves to the people of Africa.

One of my fondest memories is the nine hour road trip from Kampala to Kitgum in Northern Uganda. As we travelled the long, dirt road feeling every rock and bump and turn, we laughed, sang and packed hundreds of conference bags for the people of ‘Childcare Kitgum Servants’. I still find it mind-blowing that God chose seven, everyday Australian girls to bring hope to a country which has seen devastation and atrocity and I was actually one of them.

I loved going to bed each night under my mosquito net, listening to young mums and children singing praises to God and then waking to the smell of fires burning ready to cook porridge for thousands of hungry children. Also, when I ran down to be with the children during their morning worship and I would sit amongst their smiling faces as they would sing to the beat of a drum.

I will never be the same again.

If you would like to volunteer to be on our teams next year, please apply online here. Applications close January 30th, 2012
